Flores Advisors, LLC (FA) is dedicated to helping organizations that deliver health and human services build their capacity to best serve their diverse populations and communities.
FA is a consulting firm serving a wide range of healthcare and public service organizations through three practice areas: Language Access Planning and Compliance for Healthcare and Public Service Organizations; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Education and Training, and Capacity Building through assessment and development. In addition, FA provides technical assistance, training and support to federal grantees of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services on comprehensive language access planning to improve care management of underserved patients.
Flores Advisors (FA), established in July 2020 by Gabriela Flores, is a minority-woman owned small business specializing in language access solutions consulting services, grounded in capacity building and education. Flores Advisors’ purpose is to enhance access and improve communication by empowering organizations with expert language access solutions. We provide comprehensive training and development for staff and interpreters, ensuring high-quality service and improved access for diverse communities. Through our services, we aim to bridge language barriers, foster cultural understanding, build organizational capacity and promote equitable outcomes.
The firm is currently undergoing the municipal certification process as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and Woman Business Enterprise (WBE). Additionally, Flores Advisors offers services in organizational development, strategic planning, and cross-cultural communication coaching. Gabriela Flores, lead strategist, is a seasoned professional with over 25 years of experience in health and human services, specifically focused on refugee and immigrant populations in the Kansas City area. Her expertise lies in language access, diversity, and health equity.
Although relatively new, the company has already collaborated with notable organizations, such as the University of Missouri at Kansas City’s Collaborative for Advancing Health Services and the SAMHSA-funded national Opioid Resource Network. Other clients include North Kansas City Hospital, the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County, Kansas University Health System – Cancer Center, Vibrant Health (FQHC), Priority Care Pediatrics, and Partners in Care Foundation (California).
In 2024, Flores Advisors added a new consultant team member who brings additional experience in Language Access and over 25 years in state and local government policy and operations.
Gabriela Flores has over twenty-five years of experience working in the area of health and human services, specifically with refugee and immigrant populations in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Her area of emphasis has been in language access, diversity and health equity. Ms. Flores currently serves as the Managing Director & Founder of Flores Advisors. In her most recent role, she served as the Chief Diversity Officer of Metropolitan COmmunity College – KC. Her role was to create and implement an organizational framework across the college system focusing on educational equity, diversity and inclusion, which includes strategies specifically related to community engagement. Previously she served as the Director of the Office of Equity and Diversity at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. In addition, Ms. Flores served as the Director of Interpreter Services for Truman Medical Centers (TMC), a Level I trauma center and safety net hospital for Kansas City, Missouri.
In her recent roles, her primary function was to develop and implement a diversity, equity and inclusion educational strategy across large complex organizations with multiple locations and stakeholder groups. This included curriculum design and instruction for healthcare and academic professionals in the following areas: unconscious bias, micro-messages, introduction to LGBTQ health, supporting trans-gender youth to navigate health, trauma-informed care for refugees and immigrants, and inclusive leadership.
In addition, Ms. Flores co-developed and instructed the ‘Healthcare Interpreting Program for Spanish Interpreters’ at Johnson County Community College. Additionally, she served in a similar adjunct capacity at the Metropolitan Community Colleges, to develop a series of continuing education for medical interpreters. Ms. Flores served as a Commissioner for the national Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters from 2012 to 2018. Ms. Flores holds a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, a Master’s in Business Management, and has completed the American Hospital Association’s Cultural Competency Leadership Fellowship (2006). Ms. Flores is also a KC Chamber Centurion Alumni. Ms. Flores recently became certified in “Cultural Intelligence” and “Unconscious Bias” by the Cultural Intelligence Center.
Currently, Ms. Flores serves on the board of directors for Girls on the Run KC, Wyandotte Health Foundation, Samuel Rodgers Health Center, and KCUR (Community Advisory Board).
Strategy Consultant
Amy Coffman’s fervor for equity, inclusiveness, and belonging propelled her into a profession focused on advocacy and transformation. She has mobilized union members, advocated for organizations, overseen political campaigns for candidates and ballot measures, and acted as chief of staff to the Alaska House Minority. In 2015, Amy functioned as a Special Assistant to Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz, spearheading the creation of the Welcoming Anchorage Plan to enhance community inclusivity and accessibility.
Amy, through her involvement with Welcoming Anchorage, assumed the duty of formulating, drafting, and executing the language access policy and program for the Anchorage municipal government. This ignited a passion to assist organizations in recognizing the significance of offering language services to the public. Amy received the YWCA Alaska’s “Women of Achievement” award in 2018 for her contributions to language access in Anchorage.
Upon her return to Kansas City in 2019, she engaged in local initiatives with the Welcoming KC Initiative to formulate the Welcoming KC Plan. She soon assumed the role of co-chair for the effort and recently commenced compensated consulting work to assist Kansas City, Missouri in achieving Certified Welcoming designation through the national group, Welcoming America.
Amy established a Language Access Program for Literacy KC in a volunteer role. This program evaluated the existing language services offered to English Language Students from initial contact through enrollment and during their participation. Amy crafted a written plan for Literacy KC, leveraging statistical data and available resources, to facilitate access to language services via material translation and interpretation services for initial contact, as well as for further assistance with employment, housing, and public programs. Amy continues to support Literacy KC’s language access initiative on a volunteer basis. Her language access works continues to grow through work with refugee resettlement agencies, other non-profits and businesses eager to employ people who may have limited English abilities.
Amy established “Lighting Up Language” in 2022 in response to the significant need for enhanced services for Limited English Proficient individuals, aiding government agencies, nonprofit groups, and enterprises in developing and executing language access programs. Amy is enthusiastic in aiding further agencies in enhancing their service to communities via comprehensive and inclusive language access initiatives. Amy recently joined Flores Advisors as a Strategy Consultant in 2024.
Amy has been fascinated by languages and cultures since the age of thirteen when her family hosted their first of three AFS foreign exchange students, leading her to an exchange year in Norway. She obtained her BA in Linguistics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1997, where she had the distinct opportunity to work at the Alaska Native Language Center on the construction of the Koyukon dictionary and the transcription of the Hän language. She additionally functioned as a Russian interpreter in the Fairbanks Northstar Borough School District.
